Your Computer Holds Your Life. We Treat It That Way.
Handing someone the computer that holds your family photos, passwords, financial records, and tax returns requires trust. In one study, university researchers brought test laptops to 12 repair shops. Technicians at 6 of the 12 accessed private customer files, and most of the shops studied provided no privacy policy.
At My Computer Shop, we put our promise in writing.
- We don't browse your personal files. A technician accesses personal data only when it's necessary for the service you've authorized.
- We never wipe your computer without your approval. If a repair requires erasing, resetting, or reinstalling your system, we'll explain why and get your written authorization first.
Your computer is entrusted to us. Your data still belongs to you.

⸺ Why Choose Us
Why Long Island Chooses My Computer Shop
“Will I get hit with hidden fees?” Never. Fair estimates, always.
Bait-and-switch pricing is the most common complaint against national repair chains. Here, your $40 diagnostic fee is disclosed up front and applied toward your approved repair, and you'll receive a clear estimate before work begins so you know what to expect. Big-box counters charge $49.99 just to look — and $149.99 before a home visit even starts, with none of it credited back.
“Will someone snoop through my files?” Not under our Privacy Pledge.
Researchers caught technicians at 6 of 12 shops opening customers’ private files. We’re the only shop in the Long Island area with a written device-handling policy on every ticket: no browsing personal data, password-optional hardware repairs, no drive wiped without written consent.
“What if the repair fails later?” Your warranty is printed on the receipt.
Some local chains have been reported for blaming customers instead of honoring warranties. Our warranty terms are plain English, printed on your receipt, and honored without argument. No blame games, no fine print.
“Aren’t you just like the big stores?” Ask the neighbors who switched.
Since 2013 you’ve worked with named technicians in a shop you can walk into on Moffitt Boulevard — not a rotating call center. In our Google reviews, customers compare us directly to the “big stores” and name the technician who helped them. That’s the difference.

⸺ Straight Answers
Straight Answers About Computer Repair
How much does computer repair cost in Long Island, NY?
The cost of computer repair depends on the problem, the condition of your computer, and the work required to fix it. At My Computer Shop, we start with a $40 diagnostic, which is applied toward your approved repair. Diagnostics are included for our business contract clients.
After diagnosing the problem, you'll receive a clear estimate before work begins, along with a straightforward, plain-English explanation of what's wrong and whether your computer is worth fixing. You approve the repair before any additional work is performed.
If a repair isn't worth the cost, we'll tell you honestly and explain your options, including whether replacement makes more sense.
We also offer remote support for issues that can be resolved without bringing your computer into the shop.
How much does data recovery cost, and is my data really gone?
Data recovery costs vary depending on the type of failure and the condition of the drive. Some problems involve deleted or corrupted files, while others may involve a drive that has suffered physical or mechanical failure. We'll evaluate your drive and explain your recovery options before recommending any work.
The good news is that a computer or drive that appears to be “dead” doesn't necessarily mean your data is gone. Never keep powering on a clicking or failing drive, as continued use can make data recovery more difficult.
Bring the drive in as-is for evaluation, and we'll explain what can be recovered and what your options are before proceeding. We can also help you set up a backup solution to help prevent the same situation from happening again.
Do I still need to upgrade from Windows 10?
Yes. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, which means PCs running Windows 10 no longer receive regular security updates. Your realistic options are a Windows 11 upgrade if your hardware qualifies, Extended Security Updates as a temporary bridge, or a new PC with full data transfer.
We'll check your computer's compatibility and explain your options before recommending an upgrade. You'll know what your computer needs and what your choices are before any work begins.
For businesses, keeping unsupported and unpatched computers in service can create unnecessary security and compliance risks, especially for offices handling sensitive or patient information.
We're CompTIA-aligned and can help with Windows 11 upgrades, compatibility checks, software setup, and data transfer.
Call 631-728-1989 to discuss your Windows 10 upgrade options.
Do you offer remote computer support?
Yes. We offer remote support for computer issues that can be diagnosed and resolved without bringing your computer into our shop.

⸺ Frequently Asked
Computer Repair Questions Long Island Asks Us Most
How much does computer repair cost in Long Island, NY?
Most common repairs in the Long Island area cost $50–$200 — virus removal around $169, Windows reinstalls about $139, screen replacements from $149 plus parts. Your diagnostic cost is applied to the repair, and contract clients pay nothing for diagnostics. Call 631-728-1989 for a quote.
Do you charge for diagnostics?
Yes, and it works in your favor: the diagnostic cost is applied to the cost of your repair, so you’re not paying twice. Contract clients have diagnostics included at no charge. Either way, you approve a written estimate before we perform any repair work.
Is my computer worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?
If your computer is under five years old and the repair costs less than 25–50% of a comparable new machine, fixing it usually wins. We give you that verdict with every diagnostic — and if replacement is smarter, we sell, set up, and transfer your data for you.
How long will my repair take?
It depends on the problem and parts availability. You get a realistic timeline in writing when you drop off, plus a status call if anything changes — so you’re never left guessing or chasing us. Complex jobs like liquid damage or ordered parts take longer.
Will anyone look at my personal files during the repair?
No. Our written Privacy Pledge covers every ticket: technicians never browse personal data, hardware repairs are done without your password whenever possible, and no drive is wiped without your written OK. Independent research caught 6 of 12 shops snooping — it’s why we put ours in writing.
Can you recover data from a dead or crashed hard drive?
Usually, yes. Logical failures (deleted files, corruption) typically recover for $100–$700; mechanical failures run higher. One Islip business owner’s crashed laptop came back with every proposal, customer file, and insurance document intact on a new machine. Stop using the drive and bring it in.
My PC won’t turn on — what should I do first?
Check the power cable and outlet, then hold the power button 10 seconds and retry. If it still won’t start, it’s usually the power supply, RAM, or drive — all fixable. Don’t open it yourself; bring it to our Moffitt Boulevard shop for a diagnostic.
Do I need to upgrade from Windows 10?
Yes — Microsoft ended Windows 10 security updates on October 14, 2025, so staying put leaves you exposed. We check compatibility, upgrade qualifying PCs to Windows 11 from about $139, or help you pick a replacement with full data transfer included.
Do you work on custom-built and gaming PCs?
Absolutely — we repair and build them. Custom gaming rigs, AutoCAD workstations, and stock-trading machines, including liquid cooling, NAS setup, and RAID configuration. Every build is burned in and tested at our Islip shop before it goes home with you.
Do you support small businesses, and what does managed IT cost versus hiring in-house?
Yes — managed IT, Microsoft 365, cybersecurity, VoIP, and backup & disaster recovery across Long Island. A managed plan typically costs a fraction of one full-time IT salary and includes diagnostics at no charge. Call 631-728-1989 to talk it through.
Can you help medical or dental offices with HIPAA compliance?
Yes — we keep a HIPAA compliance expert on staff, something no other Islip-area computer shop offers. We harden email and file storage, set up encrypted backups, and document safeguards so your practice, from Islip to Hauppauge, is supported with compliance in mind.

We service every major brand from our storefront near the Islip LIRR station, handle screen replacements, keyboard and battery swaps, power supply replacements, and cooling fan repairs, and back each repair with a plain-English warranty printed on your receipt. Services include malware and spyware removal, security checkups, password recovery, and antivirus installation for Long Island-area homes and offices. Virus removal locally runs in the $50–$200 range, and you’ll know exactly what’s infected and exactly what it costs before we touch a file. Every cleanup honors our written Privacy Pledge: your personal data stays private, always, and nothing is wiped without your approval.
Wi-Fi & Home Networking
Dead zones, dropped Zoom calls, and printers that vanish from the network — we fix all of it. My Computer Shop installs and configures routers, mesh Wi-Fi systems, and complete home networks, connects printers and smart devices, and troubleshoots the mystery outages other providers give up on. We serve homes from the Great South Bay waterfront to Brentwood, and set up small-office networks with proper security — firewalls, guest networks, and encrypted Wi-Fi — so your connection is fast in every room and safe from freeloaders. One visit, working Wi-Fi, no jargon.
Business IT & Managed Services
Long Island businesses get enterprise-grade IT without the enterprise price: managed IT services, network monitoring, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365 setup and email migration, VoIP phone systems, server support, and backup & disaster recovery — plus web site and email hosting under the same roof. A HIPAA compliance expert on staff supports medical, dental, and professional practices from Islip Town Hall’s Main Street corridor to the Hauppauge industrial area. Contract clients get diagnostics included at no charge, with remote and on-site support both available. A managed plan costs a fraction of one in-house IT salary — call 631-728-1989.
Custom PC Builds & Specialty Services
We design and build custom computers matched to how you actually work and play: gaming PCs with liquid cooling, AutoCAD and design workstations, and multi-monitor stock-trading rigs. Every build is assembled, burned in, and tested at our Long Island shop, with upgrade paths planned so your investment lasts. Specialty services include NAS setup, RAID configuration, and small business consulting for owners who want a technology plan, not just parts. Already have a custom rig another shop won’t touch? Bring it in — custom and enthusiast machines are our favorite repairs.
New Computer Setup, Sales & Remote Support
Buy your next computer from a neighbor, not a warehouse. We sell new and used PCs, then handle everything the big boxes charge extra for: data transfer from your old machine, software installation, email and Microsoft account setup, and printer connection — configured and tested before it leaves the shop. Already own a new PC? Bring it in and we’ll set it up properly. And when small issues pop up later, our remote support handles tune-ups, email problems, and virus checks without you leaving home anywhere on Long Island.
